Lawlessness and extremism on the rise: Hasina targets Yunus administration
Former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has strongly criticised the Muhammad Yunus–led interim government amid continuing unrest in Dhaka following the killing of activist Sharif Osman Hadi.
In an email interview with ANI, Hasina claimed that the “lawlessness” that led to her removal has worsened under the current administration, arguing that violence has become routine while authorities either deny it or fail to act.
Hasina said such instability not only threatens internal security but also damages Bangladesh’s relations with neighbouring countries, particularly India. She alleged that minorities are increasingly targeted and warned that New Delhi is closely observing the deteriorating situation.
Hadi, linked to last year’s July uprising, was shot in Dhaka on December 12 and later died in Singapore, sparking protests demanding justice. Hasina further accused the interim government of empowering radical Islamist elements, releasing convicted terrorists, and weakening Bangladesh’s secular foundations.
She also blamed Yunus for rising tensions with India, citing anti-India protests and the killing of Hindu youth Dipu Chandra Das. According to Hasina, hostile rhetoric, failure to protect minorities, and attacks on diplomatic missions have strained ties, though she expressed confidence that relations would recover once elected governance is restored.
