Dubai, Doha hit by explosions amid US-Israel-Iran escalation
Fresh explosions were reported in Dubai on Sunday as Iran launched retaliatory attacks on Gulf states in response to US and Israeli strikes in Tehran that reportedly killed Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and his family. Khamenei is said to have died in his office, while his daughter, son-in-law, and grandson were also killed in the joint strikes. The situation has triggered widespread panic across the region, prompting authorities to issue warnings and advisories to residents.
Over 700 flights across the Gulf and wider Middle East have been cancelled amid the escalating crisis, with flight-tracking platforms like FlightRadar24 showing near-empty airspace over Dubai. Authorities confirmed a fire at the Burj Al Arab and an incident at Dubai airport that left four people injured. The UAE government has asked citizens and residents to remain indoors and follow instructions while monitoring developments.
UAE Responds to Missile Strikes
The UAE Ministry of Defence said its air defence systems successfully intercepted multiple Iranian missiles targeting the country. One civilian was reported dead in Abu Dhabi after being struck by falling debris. The ministry described the attacks as a “dangerous escalation” and reserved the right to respond to any further aggression. Smoke and plumes were also seen rising from Dubai’s Palm Jumeirah, where a hotel fire injured four people, now under control according to Dubai Civil Defence.

Regional Impact and Diplomatic Reactions
Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and UAE President Mohamed bin Zayed discussed the attacks in their first call since a public row in December, condemning the escalation and emphasizing regional stability. Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar spoke to the UAE leadership, expressing India’s concern over the worsening situation. Explosions were also reported in Doha, highlighting the spread of retaliatory strikes across the Gulf. Governments in the region have issued warnings urging expatriates and citizens to stay vigilant and avoid nonessential travel.
The ongoing US-Iran-Israel conflict has plunged the Gulf into a heightened state of alert, with authorities across multiple countries taking measures to protect civilians and critical infrastructure.
