The region has been battling a nor’easter storm since Sunday, bringing torrential rain and strong winds, conditions that investigators are now considering as a possible factor in the crash.

Officials Begin Investigation

In a preliminary statement, police said the plane may have been attempting to land at New Bedford Regional Airport, but no flight plan or passenger details were filed. “No immediate information is available on the pilot or passengers,” authorities said.

The Massachusetts Department of Transportation has announced that Route 195 westbound near exit 19 will remain closed for several hours as investigation and cleanup continue.

Dartmouth lies about 57 miles south of Boston and 28 miles southeast of Providence, Rhode Island, a region now shaken by this devastating mid-morning tragedy.
