24-Year-Old Indian Student Dies In House Fire In US
A 24-year-old Indian student tragically died in the United States after sustaining critical injuries in a devastating house fire. The Indian mission in the US confirmed the death of the victim, Sahaja Reddy Udumala, who was pursuing her Master’s degree in Albany, New York.
According to the Albany Police Department, emergency teams rushed to the residence after receiving reports of a major fire. Upon arrival, they found the house completely engulfed in flames, with several occupants trapped inside. Four adults were rescued and given immediate medical attention before being taken to a nearby hospital with serious injuries. Two of them had to be transferred to a specialised burn centre.
Sahaja, however, suffered extensive burn injuries. Her cousin, Rathna Gopu, revealed that nearly 90% of Sahaja’s body was burnt. Despite intensive medical care, her condition deteriorated, leading to organ failure and her death. Gopu described Sahaja as a kind and determined young woman who touched the lives of everyone around her.
A fundraiser has been launched to cover funeral arrangements, repatriation of her remains, and support for her grieving family. Over USD 109,000 has already been raised out of the USD 120,000 goal.
The Consulate General of India in New York expressed deep sorrow over her passing and said it is closely coordinating with her family while providing all necessary assistance.
