Every year, students from all over the world celebrate November 17 as International Students' Day, and thousands of students participate in the organised events.

How many of you are aware of the significance of International Students' Day on this special day? Or that has a tragic backstory?

1939 Tragic Story

The anniversary commemorates the 1939 Nazi storming of the University of Prague during World War II. The students fought against the German occupation of Czechoslovakia, as well as the murders of Jan Opletal and worker Václav Sedláek. As a result, the Nazis rounded up the students, murdered nine student leaders, and imprisoned over 1,200 of them. The day is set aside to honour their bravery and vigour.

Many universities around the world use this day to promote multiculturalism and diversity. On International Students' Day, some universities host a variety of events to encourage youth participation. Aside from universities, many student organisations host events on International Student Day. Students can help by participating in any event other than an individual social service. They can even use social media to spread the word about the significance of International Student Day.

The day encourages people to work together to provide safe, secure, and adequate economic, social, and health benefits for all students worldwide. The day recognises the importance of youth access to education around the world. The purpose of the day is to highlight the contributions that these young people make all over the world. It also works to protect and advance their rights and interests. International Students' Day is now observed worldwide to commemorate and promote education. Students can learn about other cultures and languages on this day.

International Students' Day will highlight the importance of all students around the world speaking out about education and student-related issues. This special day provides an opportunity for every student to bring student activism to the attention of society.
