It’s well-known that Jaya Bachchan and Rekha once lived in the same Mumbai building. But few know the story of who made that happen. The person behind this unlikely coincidence was none other than the late veteran actor Asrani.

When Asrani Helped Rekha Find a Home in Mumbai
During a conversation with journalist Vickey Lalwani, film historian and Asrani’s close friend Hanif Zaveri recalled the actor’s generous nature.
Zaveri shared, “When Asrani sahab became successful, he helped Rekha find a home. Rekha was looking for a flat. She came from Madras (now called Chennai), and back then, she used to travel all the way from there to shoot and then return home. She wasn’t even such a big star back then, and she needed a place to stay. So she contacted Asrani sahab regarding the same, who made her meet a broker, and she found a flat on rent.”
Thanks to Asrani’s assistance, Rekha finally secured a comfortable place to stay in Mumbai - a move that unknowingly set the stage for a unique Bollywood neighborhood moment.
The Same Broker Helped Jaya Bachchan Too
Soon after, Jaya Bachchan, who had come to Mumbai from Bhopal, was also in search of a home. Asrani and Jaya shared a close bond, and naturally, she reached out to him for help.
Zaveri revealed, “And that’s how Jaya Bachchan and Rekha started living in the same building.”
Thus, through a simple act of kindness and a shared broker, Asrani became the unseen link that brought the two Silsila actresses under one roof - quite literally.
The Building That Housed Many Stars
Over time, the same building became a hub for several film personalities, turning into one of Mumbai’s most star-studded addresses. What began as Asrani’s gesture to help two friends soon became a piece of Bollywood history.
