The Question That Surprises Many

People often associate record-breaking Filmfare wins with cinematic giants like Amitabh Bachchan or India’s first superstar, Rajesh Khanna. But here’s a twist that surprises even the most ardent movie buffs - neither Amitabh nor Rajesh holds the record for the most Filmfare Best Actor wins.

That distinction belongs to two extraordinary men, who have together defined eras of Indian cinema - Dilip Kumar and Shah Rukh Khan.

Dilip Kumar: The Tragedy King Who Set the Benchmark

The original megastar of Hindi cinema, Dilip Kumar, stands tall with eight Filmfare Best Actor awards - a record that once seemed untouchable.

His first win came in 1954 for Daag, followed by timeless performances in Devdas (1955), Naya Daur (1957), Kohinoor (1960), Ram Aur Shyam (1967), and Shakti (1982). Known for his depth, restraint, and emotional power, Dilip Kumar’s artistry became the gold standard for generations of actors that followed.

Shah Rukh Khan: The King Who Matched the Legend

Decades later, a new superstar rose to share that same record. Shah Rukh Khan, dubbed the “Baadshah of Bollywood,” equalled Dilip Kumar’s eight wins a testament to his versatility and enduring charm.

From the anti-hero of Baazigar (1993) to the romantic Raj of Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (1995), the energetic Rahul of Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (1998), the visionary coach of Chak De! India (2007), and the heartfelt Rizwan Khan of My Name Is Khan (2010), SRK’s performances have not just won awards - they’ve defined eras.

And What About Amitabh, Rajesh & Others?

Amitabh Bachchan, often hailed as the “Shahenshah of Bollywood,” isn’t far behind. His unforgettable performances in Amar Akbar Anthony, Don, Hum, and Paa earned him multiple Best Actor wins, along with the Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award in 1991.

Rajesh Khanna, India’s first superstar, bagged three Best Actor trophies for Sachaa Jhutha (1971), Anand (1972), and Avishkaar (1975), before being honoured with the Lifetime Achievement Award in 2005.

Modern icons like Hrithik Roshan and Ranbir Kapoor have also joined the elite list, each with four Best Actor awards, proving the Filmfare legacy continues to evolve with every generation.

Other stalwarts such as Raj Kapoor, Dev Anand, Ashok Kumar, Sanjeev Kumar, and Anil Kapoor have each won the Best Actor trophy twice - a shining reminder that Filmfare has consistently honoured brilliance across every era of Indian cinema.
