Bollywood actor Sushant Singh Rajput’s tragic death in June 2020 reopened a national debate this year after the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) filed closure reports in March that found no evidence of criminality or financial embezzlement. Now, the actor’s family says it will legally contest the agency’s findings- calling the closure report incomplete and “nothing but an eyewash.”

What the CBI Concluded?

According to the closure reports filed earlier in 2025, the CBI concluded there was no proof that Sushant Singh Rajput was illegally confined, threatened or abetted to commit suicide, and that there was no substantiation for allegations of misuse of his funds.

The agency even noted that SSR had referred to Rhea Chakraborty as “family.” Why the family will fight it Sushant’s family and their lawyer, Advocate Varun Singh, say the closure report is deficient because supporting documents- bank statements, medical and DNA reports, witness statements, chat and technical records- were not filed along with the report.

Singh has described the document as “flimsy” and argued that the agency’s conclusions are not backed up by the underlying material the prosecution would typically submit.

The family intends to file a protest petition and challenge the report in court.

Next Legal Steps and Court Timetable

The closure reports were submitted to magistrate courts in Mumbai and Patna; courts must now decide whether to accept the reports or ask the CBI to continue probing.

Media reports say the Patna matter will next be heard in December, when the family will press its challenge; Mumbai proceedings- where Rhea Chakraborty has already been served notice- continue separately.

SSR Case To Remain Alive In Court!

The SSR case has been a flashpoint in India’s conversations about media, mental health, institutions and justice. Even as the CBI’s technical finding points to suicide, the family’s refusal to accept the closure report ensures the legal and public scrutiny around the case will continue until the courts rule on whether the agency did enough.
