According to reports by 123 Telugu, April 9, 2027, has been tentatively locked for the theatrical release. There is also fresh speculation that a major update, possibly regarding the release date, could be announced on March 26, 2026, coinciding with Rama Navami.
However, the team has only reiterated that the film will release in 2027, without confirming a specific date.
Teaser Makes History on Global Stage
Excitement around Varanasi has been steadily growing since its first teaser was unveiled at a grand event in Hyderabad on November 15. The teaser later made history with a special screening at the iconic Le Grand Rex theatre in Paris on January 5, marking the first time an Indian film teaser premiered at the venue. The moment was hailed as a major milestone for Indian cinema, highlighting the film’s global appeal and ambition.
Epic Scale, Cast, and Story Details
The teaser offered a powerful glimpse of Mahesh Babu as Rudhra, wielding a trishul and riding a bull, while Priyanka Chopra plays Mandakini and Prithviraj Sukumaran essays the antagonist Kumbha.
Rajamouli has also revealed that Mahesh Babu will briefly appear as Lord Rama, a role that reportedly gave the director “goosebumps.” Set partly in 7200 BCE during the Treta Yuga, Varanasi is described as a historical epic with elements of time travel, ancient legends, and high-stakes adventure.
With music by MM Keeravani and story by V Vijayendra Prasad, the film is reportedly being made on a budget exceeding ₹1,000 crore, making it one of India’s most ambitious cinematic ventures.
