Samantha Akkineni, who recently completed 11 years in the south film industry, has portrayed many characters and different roles for which she has garnered praises and love from critics and fans.

However, for Samantha her dream role was to play either a princess or a lead in a period drama. And this dream of her will soon turn into reality with her upcoming magnum-opus Shaakuntalam.

The Gunasekhar’s mythological drama Shaakuntalam produced by Neelima Guna and Dil Raju was launched amid fanfare on Monday.

Samantha Akkineni, Dev Mohan, director Gunasekhar and producer Dil Raju graced the event.

Samantha and Dev Mohan will play lead roles. While Majili actress will be essaying Shankuntala's role, the Sufiyum Sujatayum fame will play the role of Dushyant, her paramour. Ther film will mark Dev's Telugu debut.

Speaking at the launch event, Samantha thanked director Gunasekhar and producer Dil Raju for giving her the opportunity.

“At this point of my career, Dil Raju sir and Guna sir have given me the biggest gift of my career. In 10 years of being in the film industry, it is today that I am getting to play a role which has been my dream for a very long time. I hope I am able to give 100 percent to the project, which Guna sir is so passionate about, ” she said.

“In the journey of 50 films, I have done different roles and different genres. I have even attempted action in The Family Man and have also portrayed a villain but my dream role has always been to be in a period film or play a princess,” added Samantha.

Shaakuntalam, a pan-Indian film, based on Kalidas' Abnignana Shaakunthalam will begin shoot from next week.

Reportedly, Samantha has been prepping for the film from quite some time. She also underwent classical training for four months for the movie.

Samntha's fans are super excited to watch their favourite star in her dream role and are eagerly waiting for the film's realease which is scheduled to hit the big screen next year.
