Indonesians Welcomed Indian PM With Song on the Mahatma

In 2018 the Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi was on his visit to Indonesia. The famous Indonesian singer Fryda Lucyana surprised everyone and even the PM by performing 'Sabarmati ke Sant' at the banquet hosted by President Joko Widodo.

It greatly impressed the India PM who took to Twitter to appreciate this gesture by the Indonesians. He wrote, "A wonderful rendition of 'Sabarmati Ke Sant Tune Kar Diya Kamal' sung by Fryda Lucyana at the banquet hosted by President @jokowi for PM."

Gandhiji's Song Was Translated in Urdu To Eulogize Jinnah

This song on Mahatma Gandhi from the film directed by Satyen Bose was later on translated in Urdu and released in Pakistan. Shockingly, it was dedicated to eulogizing Jinnah, Gandhiji's Pakistani counterpart.

Instead of De Di Hume Azadi, the lyrics said, "De di humein azaadi ki duniya huyi hairaan/ Aye Quaid-e-Azam tera ehsaan hai ehsaan." So a song celebrating the Father of India was simply translated and used to praise Jinnah who was responsible for India's partition.

The song was included in a Pakistani movie Bedaari released in 1956 and sung by Munawar Sultana. Even the entire backdrop and setting of the song look inspired by Jagriti released in 1954.

When Haryana Minister Said Lyrics Are An Insult To Freedom Fighters

A couple of years ago, a cabinet minister from Haryana, Anil Vij triggered controversy. He said that this song on Mahatma Gandhi is an insult to freedom fighters. Referring to the starting lyrics of the song Vij said that it does not include those who fought with arms against the British.
