‘Labels Like Female-Oriented Need to Disappear’
In a recent interview with Hindustan Times, Rani Mukerji spoke candidly about how cinema has evolved over the years. She emphasised that films should no longer be viewed purely as a source of entertainment, but also as a medium for awareness and social change.
“Gone are the days when we chose cinema only and only for entertainment. Now, we should choose cinema also for awareness,” she said, adding that younger generations are playing a crucial role in dismantling outdated mindsets. According to Rani, labels such as ‘female-oriented cinema’ are unnecessary and reductive.
“Films should be watched based on their content. Why give labels like, ‘A film with a female cop is a female-centric film’? It’s so tiring just to even hear it!” she remarked, stressing that storytelling should be judged on merit, not the gender of the protagonist.
