Mumbai: Legendary musician R D Burman who passed away in the year 1994 would have turned 79 today but even more than two decades after his demise his compositions continue to rule our hearts.

Fondly known as Pancham Da, he graced the Indian film industry over many years.

Known for his knack for experimentation with sounds, the musical genius, who is known for evergreen songs like "Yaadon ki baraat", "Tum bin jaaun kahan", gave legendary singers Kishore Kumar, Asha Bhosle and Lata Mangeshkar some of the best tunes to lend their voices to.

During his heydays, Burman pioneered in bringing western music to an unprecedented level in the Indian film industry.

According to "R D Burman - The Prince of Music" by Rupa Publications, RD's first tryst with opportunism in the film industry occurred when his father suffered a cardiac arrest and was abandoned by the likes of legendary filmmaker Guru Dutt, for whom the Burman-senior had scored music in all time classics like "Pyaasa" (1957) and "Kaagaz Ke Phool" (1959).
