Bhubaneswar is all set to go the greener way as the city will be witnessing the first-ever thrifting event on Sunday. ‘Friday For Future’, an international climate change movement, which also has a regional chapter in the capital city of Odisha will be introducing thrifting culture to the state with a student-driven event to promote sustainability and reusing.

For those who are wondering what does thrifting mean, thrift or thrifting means shopping gently used items at discounted prices. Thrifted items are usually in good shape and sold by the previous owner so that it can be useful to a new owner. It can be any item, from clothing, accessories to books as well. The concept which is relatively new to the country as well is quite popular in western countries.

Why Thrift?

Thrifting doesn’t only mean good for your wallet but also for the planet. It helps in reducing the carbon footprints and less clothing dumped in the landfills. “Thrifting promotes sustainability and reusing. Through the event, we aim to introduce this environment-friendly alternative to people. Given the current economic scenario, it will also be a cheaper alternative for people who want to go shopping or buy something without straining their purse” says Akankshya Mohanty, founder, FFF Bhubaneswar.

People will not only be able to go thrift shopping but also enjoy live music by local artists and food by small local businesses. “The entire event and even FFF is a student-driven initiative where students from different schools and colleges in the city come together” adds Akankshya.

Keshab Satpathy, Mr. India Junior winner from the State, is one of the many budding entrepreneurs who is setting up a stall at the event. “I have a lot of clothes, accessories, and books that I don’t use and it eventually ends up in the trash after using once or twice. So this initiative feels great as it is a step towards sustainable fashion and I hope more people adopt this eco-friendly method” he says.

The event will take place at Urban Legends, Patia in Bhubaneswar on Sunday with on-spot registration.
