Nitesh Kumar Sahoo

The 2007 Hindi movie Taare Zameen Par helmed and produced by Aamir Khan remains one of the most liked movies. But, rather than Aamir’s character, the movie is remembered for Darsheel Safary aka Ishaan’s struggle with dyslexia, and how he gets help from his teacher to uncover his potential.

Watching Ishaan being criticised by his father and teachers for his poor academic performances and being trolled by his friends must have struck the emotional chords of many. But, undeniably, Darsheel’s look must have been taken on a funny note by many.

But, did you know why Bollywood ’s Mr Perfectionist Aamir picked Darsheel for the role?

Darsheel himself has revealed the reason why he got selected for Ishaan’s role in the critically acclaimed drama.

Recalling his childhood days, Darsheel, who has now grown up to be a 25-yer-old youth, said that everyone made fun of him in his personal life because of his teeth. However, this helped him bag the film.

Darsheel was quoted as saying, “In my personal life, away from acting too, I have had these things. I’ve been made fun of for my height, for my teeth and everything. My teeth were like 1 kilometre out. It all happens for a reason. All that happened and then I got the film because of those teeth. The way I look at it is that it is a learning thing. That is how you don’t get affected.”

Darsheel as Ishaan with a learning disorder won the hearts of movie lovers with his stellar performance under the captaincy of Khan. Following the tremendous success of Taare Zameen Par, he bagged another movie in 2010 ‘Bumm Bumm Bole’. In 2011 he also featured as a superhero Zokkomon. In 2012, Darsheel also starred in Midnight’s Children which is an adaptation of Salman Rushdie’s novel with the same name.

Darsheel will next be seen in Quickie, helmed by Pradip Atluri.
