Basyukta Basuprava

This year has been one hell of a ride for all the movie buffs, with no Friday theatre releases and a lot of OTT binges. Now, we are heading towards the end, with the last Friday of the year tomorrow. If it would have been any other year, the last Friday of the year also being Christmas would be one of the most sought after movie release dates with the biggest flicks hitting the screen. While we do not have Khans and Kapoors on Christmas unlike every year, the audience has three very different movies to choose from to kick off their holidays.

Let us look at the three last Friday releases of 2020 and which one is worth your last weekend of the year –

Shakeela

This film marks the collaboration of two brilliants actors –Richa Chadda and Pankaj Tripathy. The movie is a biopic based on the life of adult star Shakeela (played by Richa), who ruled the South Indian film industry for over two decades. Shakeela made her debut at the young age of 16, she went on to become a major star in the ’90s. Such was her aura that, stars back then used to avoid releasing their films opposite her. Pankaj Tripathi in the lead and is directed by noted director Indrajit Lankesh. The film is her rags to riches and then again back to rags story.

While some compared the film to another version of The Dirty Picture, the movie has more political and suspense angles to it. Watch it if you are still hung up on Pankaj Tripathi as Kaleen Bhaiya in Mirzapur.

Coolie No.1

Needless to say, the film is a remake of the 90’s cult classic where Varun Dhawan and Sara Ali Khan step into the shoes of Govinda and Karishma Kapoor. The plot is modernized along the same lines. After being insulted by a rich businessman named Rosario, pandit Jai Kishen teaches him a lesson by getting his daughter married to Raju - a Coolie posing as a millionaire. Soon Raju’s real identity is exposed but he cooks up a story of having a filthy rich twin. One lie leads to another and things start to go out of hand.

This comedy of errors is David Dhawan’s forte and Coolie No.1 promises to be a full-on masala film. However, avoid it if you have already watched the original movie as the movie has nothing new to offer except Varun Dhawan’s fun performance and energy.

Wonder Woman 1984

DC fans assemble as the much-awaited superhero flick is here. Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman is too good to miss. While there are a number of flaws in Wonder Woman 1984, Gal Gadot’s return is enough to make WW fans give it a chance. The film is low on action compared to the first installment but is funny and charming. The visual effects are breathtaking and brownie points as HBO Max has made it free for the viewers to watch.

However if you haven’t watched 2017’s Wonder Woman, you can skip this and watch that first as it is far more entertaining and perfect compared to WW 1984.
