Emraan Hashmi with his son
For Emraan Hashmi, an actor known for portraying intense, broken and resilient characters on screen, real life delivered a moment far more devastating than any script. In a recent conversation with Ranveer Allahbadia, the actor revisited the darkest chapter of his life when his young son Ayaan was diagnosed with cancer in 2014, a moment that redefined everything beyond cinema and stardom.
Emraan described how an ordinary afternoon transformed into a nightmare within hours. On January 13, 2014, the family had stepped out for brunch, sharing pizza and laughter. What seemed like a harmless moment soon revealed the first alarming sign when his son passed blood in his urine. Within three hours, they were at a doctor’s clinic, where Emraan was told his son had cancer and would need immediate surgery followed by chemotherapy.
“The doctor said your son has cancer… my whole world flipped in a matter of 12 hours,” Emraan recalled, describing the shock that came without warning.

When Life’s Confidence Shattered
The timing made the blow even harder. Emraan admitted that life had finally felt stable and under control. Just when he believed he had found balance, everything collapsed in an instant. What followed was a gruelling five-year journey marked by hospital visits, treatments and constant fear.
A Phase That Changed Him Forever
That period, Emraan has often said, stripped life down to its bare essentials, shifting focus from ambition to gratitude and presence. The experience later inspired him to write a book to support parents facing similar battles, turning personal pain into collective hope.
Looking Ahead
Today, with his son healthy and recovering, Emraan sees those years as the most brutal yet transformative phase of his life. On the professional front, the actor is currently enjoying a strong run, with his recent series Taskaree earning praise for his restrained and powerful performance.
For Emraan Hashmi, the story is no longer about survival alone but about resilience, perspective and enduring hope.
