After rewriting box office history with a record-breaking theatrical run, Dhurandhar finally premiered on Netflix at midnight on January 30. The Ranveer Singh starrer, which crossed Rs 1,000 crore in India and over Rs 1,300 crore worldwide, was one of the most-awaited OTT releases of the year. However, instead of celebrations, the streaming debut triggered intense fan reactions and online controversy.

Fans Spot Runtime Difference, Cry “Trimmed Version”

Almost immediately after Dhurandhar went live on Netflix, fans took to social media to flag a major difference. Viewers noted that the film’s runtime on Netflix is 3 hours and 25 minutes, while the theatrical version they watched in December ran for 3 hours and 34 minutes.

The nine-minute gap led to angry posts accusing Netflix of streaming a “censored” or “cut” version of the film. Several fans questioned why such a massive blockbuster would be altered without prior clarification, with hashtags questioning the OTT edit trending across platforms.

Viewers React to Muted Dialogues and Technical Changes

Adding to the outrage, fans also pointed out noticeable changes in dialogue, colour grading, and sound mixing. The biggest talking point online was a scene around the 1 hour 55 minute mark involving Sanjay Dutt’s character, SP Chaudhary Aslam.

In the Netflix version, references to the Baloch community are muted, which fans quickly compared with clips from the original theatrical cut. Many expressed disappointment, calling the edits “jarring” and “distracting,” while others felt the muted dialogue diluted the impact of a crucial scene. The English subtitles reflecting the altered lines further fueled debate.

Why Fans Are Still Divided Despite Clarification

As explanations emerged, it became clear that Dhurandhar exists in multiple official versions. Following objections after its release, the makers were instructed to mute specific words and dialogues. The revised censor-approved cut, with a runtime of 3 hours, 28 minutes and 56 seconds, began screening in theatres on January 1.

Netflix is streaming this updated theatrical version provided by the producers, not a separately censored OTT edit. Insiders also revealed that the remaining runtime difference is largely due to frame rate optimisation for streaming, not scene deletions. Importantly, fans noted with relief that the film’s violent and gory sequences remain untouched.

While some viewers accepted the clarification, others remain dissatisfied, arguing that the theatrical experience still feels superior. With the controversy settling, fan attention has now shifted to the next chapter, as Dhurandhar: The Revenge gears up for its theatrical release on March 19, 2026.
