Within a very short span of time young actresses like Kiara Advani, and Kriti Sanon have surged ahead. They have delivered some big hits in the last few years and currently have some of the biggest movies in their respective kitties.
Deepika Padukone and Katrina Kaif Need Back to Back Hits
Deeps last big hit was Padmaavat released a couple of years ago. Her first production venture Chhapaak in which she played the lead role of acid attack survivor triggered a lot of controversies but tanked at the box-office.

Katrina Kaif's biggest blockbuster in recent times was YRF's Ek Tha Tiger starring Salman Khan in the lead. It was the second movie from the hit Tiger franchise and was more of a Sallubhai movie even though Kat's work was appreciated.
Her last two flicks were big-budget movies and with very big stars but also become the biggest flops. Thugs of Hindostan with Aamir Khan and Zero with Shah Rukh Khan were two of the biggest flops of Katrina's career.
Both these actresses are in need of big hits. Deepika Padukone has several mega projects in hand. She is a part of 83 that stars Ranveer Singh in the lead. Deeps will also be seen in Pathan opposite Shah Rukh Khan and in Nag Ashwin's mega movie opposite Prabhas.

Unfortunately, SRK does not hold clout at the box-office anymore. And post debacle of Saaho, a Prabhas' movie can turn out to be an unwanted gamble.

Katrina Kaif has several big movies in her kitty. And most important one is Rohit Shetty's Sooryavanshai with Akshay Kumar, the third movie from the Tiger franchise with Salman and Abbas Ali Zafar's next in which Kats is playing a superwoman.
While Akki and Sallu's movies may become big hits as expected they may not do wonders to Katrina's career. For her, it is important that the superwoman flick does well at the box-office.
Kriti Sanon and Kiara Advani Are First Preference For Young Stars, Big Projects
The last two years have seen the rise of newbies like Kriti and Kiara. Both do not belong to Bollywood's inner circles and hence do not have the advantage of being a star kid. Even then they have managed to attract big projects in recent times.
Kiara rose to fame with Kabir Singh and Good Newwz and currently has Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2 with Kartik Aaryan, and Shershaah with Sidharth Malhotra. Kriti on the other hand has now emerged as the black horse bagging 3 to 4 good projects in the span of just a year.

She has been roped in to play Sita in Adipurush opposite Prabhas by Om Raut. Kriti also has Ganapath with Tiger Shroff, Bachchan Panday with Akshay Kumar, Bhediya with Varun Dhawan, and Mimi.
Interestingly, while Deepika and Katrina can now only work with actors in selected age groups like Akshay, Ranbir, Ranveer, or Salman, both Kiara Advani and Kriti Sanon have the advantage of working with actors from all the age groups.
