Netflix has just rewritten the rules of the entertainment world. In a move no one saw coming so soon, the streaming giant has announced an $82.7 billion acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD), a deal that instantly unlocks legendary franchises like Game of Thrones, Harry Potter, and the DC Universe for millions of viewers.
What once felt impossible for Netflix loyalists is now on the verge of reality: Westeros, Hogwarts, and Gotham City are all headed to the platform.
Unanimously approved by both companies’ boards, the agreement marks one of the largest and most influential entertainment mergers ever recorded. With HBO, HBO Max, Warner Bros. studios, and DC Entertainment included in the acquisition, Netflix is positioning itself as the most powerful content destination in global streaming.
Netflix’s SEC filing values the deal at $72 billion in equity, with WBD shares priced at $27.75, outbidding rivals including Paramount, Skydance and NBC Universal. Co-CEO Ted Sarandos called the merger a landmark moment, saying it will help “define the next century of storytelling.” The acquisition awaits SEC approval and the scheduled spinoff of WBD’s Global Networks division by Q3 2026.
What Changes for Viewers? A Lot.
Once finalised, Netflix subscribers will gain access to an expansive catalogue of Warner Bros. and HBO classics from Succession, The Last of Us, and Game of Thrones to The Dark Knight trilogy and the Harry Potter films. Netflix plans to maintain Warner Bros.’ theatrical release strategy while exploring integrated subscription tiers that blend HBO and Netflix’s vast libraries.
The streamer says the merger will deepen its content offering and boost production capacity, giving viewers more premium content than ever before.
This acquisition isn’t just a business deal; it’s a redefining moment for entertainment. With Warner Bros.’ heritage colliding with Netflix’s global dominance, viewers are set to enjoy the richest streaming catalogue in history. And yes, Westeros and Hogwarts are officially coming to Netflix.
