Veteran Bollywood actor Dharmendra passed away aged 89 in Mumbai. Fondly known as the “He-Man” of Indian cinema, Dharmendra breathed his last on Monday, sources said.
Born on December 8, 1935, in Nasrali, Punjab, Dharmendra began his acting journey with Dil Bhi Tera Hum Bhi Tere in 1960. He rose to stardom in the 1960s and 1970s with a series of acclaimed performances in Phool Aur Patthar, Anupama, Satyakam, Chupke Chupke, and the cult classic Sholay.
Renowned for his blend of rugged charm and emotional depth, Dharmendra redefined the image of the Hindi film hero. His on-screen pairing with Hema Malini and camaraderie with Amitabh Bachchan remain etched in cinematic history.
Personal Life And Political Journey
Dharmendra married Prakash Kaur in 1954 and later wed actress Hema Malini in 1980. He is survived by his children, Sunny, Bobby, Esha, Vijeta, Ahana, and Ajeita Deol. Beyond cinema, he served as a Member of Parliament from Bikaner, Rajasthan, between 2004 and 2009, representing the Bharatiya Janata Party.
Honours And Lasting Legacy
Over his illustrious career, Dharmendra received the Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award (1997), the National Film Award for Best Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment for Ghayal (1991), and the Padma Bhushan (2012), among many others. His passing marks the end of an era for Hindi films.
The actor, born as Dharmendra Singh Deol, breathed his last at his residence. He was admitted to Breach Candy hospital earlier this month due to respiratory complications.
He was known for his versatility, mastering roles from the romantic hero to the tough action star. His career boasts over 300 films, many of which are considered classics today.
