MCU confirms Chris Hemsworth’s return as Thor Photograph: (X)
Marvel Studios has officially confirmed the return of Chris Hemsworth as Thor with the second teaser for Avengers: Doomsday, and the tone is strikingly serious. After years of debate over the character’s increasingly comedic portrayal, the new teaser signals a powerful course correction — bringing back the God of Thunder in his most grounded and formidable form.

A Dark, Emotional Homecoming for Thor
The teaser, which began playing in theatres last week, opens in a quiet forest setting. Thor is seen speaking to his late father, Odin, asking for strength and protection against an approaching threat. The moment immediately recalls the emotional depth that defined Thor during Avengers: Infinity War, widely considered the character’s most powerful on-screen portrayal.
Also featured is Love — the daughter of Gorr whom Thor adopted in Thor: Love and Thunder — played by Hemsworth’s real-life daughter, India Rose Hemsworth. Thor’s concern for her safety forms the emotional core of the teaser, showing a hero driven not by glory, but by responsibility and fear of loss.

Fatherhood Shapes Thor’s Final Battle
Thor’s narration reflects on his long life of duty and battle, before acknowledging the unexpected gift fate gave him — fatherhood. While this new role has softened him, it has also raised the stakes. The looming threat of Victor von Doom, played by Robert Downey Jr., forces Thor to prepare for war once again.
Unlike earlier versions of the character, this Thor wants more than victory. He speaks of wanting to be “warmth” and an example to Love, longing for a life of stillness rather than endless battle. The teaser suggests a matured hero, one focused on legacy and protection rather than spectacle.
Correcting the Tone After Love and Thunder
The teaser also feels like a direct response to criticism surrounding Thor: Love and Thunder. While the film performed well at the box office, it was widely criticised for leaning too heavily into comedy. Even Hemsworth admitted he went too far, later saying he had “become a parody” of himself.
Under the direction of the Russo Brothers, Avengers: Doomsday clearly sidelines the “funny Thor” in favour of the warrior audiences first fell in love with. The Russos, who previously delivered Infinity War and Endgame, appear determined to restore the emotional weight and epic scale of Marvel’s strongest era.
Victor von Doom Looms Large
Though the teaser reveals little about Doom’s plan, the ominous tone suggests a threat equal to — or greater than — Thanos. Downey Jr.’s casting as the iconic villain has already reshaped expectations for the MCU, with fans eager to see how his performance contrasts with his legendary run as Tony Stark.
