Bhubaneswar/New Delhi: The Dadasaheb Phalke award, country’s highest film honour will be presented this year to Rajnikant for his “outstanding contribution for the growth and development of Indian cinema," Information and broadcasting minister Prakash Javadekar made the announcement during a presser today.

"Happy to announce Dadasaheb Phalke award for 2019 to one of the greatest actors in history of Indian cinema Rajnikant ji. His contribution as actor, producer and screenwriter has been iconic," tweeted Javadekar.

On the jury that selected Rajinikant for the award were Legendary singer Asha Bhosle, Film Drector Subhash Ghai, Actor Mohanlal, Music Director & Singer Shankar Mahadevan and Actor Biswajeet Chatterjee.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also hailed Rajinikanth for his contribution to cinema while congratulating him on the honour.

"Popular across generations, a body of work few can boast of, diverse roles and an endearing personality...that's Shri @rajinikanth Ji for you. It is a matter of immense joy that Thalaiva has been conferred with the Dadasaheb Phalke Award. Congratulations to him," Modi said in a tweet.

The Dadasaheb Phalke award consists of a Swarna Kamal (Golden Lotus), a shawl and a cash prize of Rs 1,000,000.

Notably, Rajinikanth made his debut in the 1975 Tamil film Apoorva Ragangal. He has delivered many super hit films such as Billu, Muthu, Baashha, Sivaji, and Enthiran. The South superstar also starred in several Bollywood movies such as Hum, Andha Kanoon, Bhagwaan Dada, Aatank hi Aatank and Chaalbaaz.

Meanwhile, congratulatory messages are pouring in from political leaders, actors, directors and social workers, besides people from all walks of life.
