New Delhi: The Civil Services Preliminary Examination 2020 conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) began at 2569 centres across 72 cities in the country. More than 10 lakh candidates have applied for the Civil Services Examination this year.

The candidates who qualify the UPSC Civil Services Prelims will be shortlisted for the main exam which is scheduled to be held in January 2021. Earlier, the UPSC had scheduled the examination on May 31. However, due to COVID-19 pandemic, the commission postponed the examination on October 4.

UPSC Prelims 2020 Shift Timing

The Civil Services Preliminary Examination 2020 will be conducted in two shifts, first will be held from 9:30 am to 11:30 am, while the second shift will take place between 2:30 pm to 4:30 pm.

COVID-19 Guidelines For UPSC Aspirants

The commission has also released certain guidelines to be followed by the candidates on the day of examination.

Candidates without mask/ face cover will not be allowed entry into the venue,” reads the official notification by the UPSC.

Candidates can also bring their own hand sanitizers in transparent bottles, it read.

Candidates have to follow COVID-19 norms of ‘social distancing’ as well as ‘personal hygiene’ inside the examination halls/rooms as well as in the premises of the venue, said the UPSC.

UPSC Prelims 2020 Entry Rules Inside Examination Hall

Candidates are advised to bring a copy of their admit card to their respective examination centre or else they won’t be allowed to appear in the examination.

The candidates are also required to bring along their photo ID card, whose number is mentioned on the e-admit card, for appearing at each session of the examination, said the UPSC official notification.

Candidates will be allowed to enter the examination centre only 10 minutes before the commencement of the exam (09:20 am in the morning shift and 02:20 pm in the afternoon shift). No candidate shall be allowed the entry into the examination venue after closure of the entry

UPSC Prelims 2020: Guidelines Inside Examination Hall

Candidates are advised to bring black ballpoint pen as they shall be required to fill the OMR answer sheets and attendance list with black ballpoint pen only, said a UPSC statement.

Use of normal or simple wristwatches by candidates is allowed inside the examination rooms/ halls. However, use of watches fitted with any special accessory that might be used as a communication device or smartwatches is strictly prohibited and candidates are not allowed to take such watches into the examination rooms/ halls, the Commission said.

Mobile phone (even in switched off mode), pager or any electronic equipment, programmable device, storage media like pen drive, smartwatches etc, camera or Bluetooth devices, any other equipment or related accessories either in working or switched off mode capable of being used as a communication device and calculator are banned inside the examination hall.

Any infringement of these instructions shall entail disciplinary action against the concerned candidates including debarment from future examination/selection. Valuable/ costly items and bags are also not allowed inside the examination venue, said UPSC said.

The civil services examination is held by the UPSC every year in three stages preliminary, main and interview to select officers for the Indian Administrative Service (IAS), the Indian Foreign Service (IFS) and the Indian Police Service (IPS), among others.
