New Delhi: The University Grants Commission (UGC) has asked varsities across the country to celebrate the third anniversary of the "Swachh Bharat" campaign and plant 70 saplings to mark 70th year of the country's Independence.

The varsities and higher educational institutions have also been asked to send photographs to ensure compliance with the directive.

"The period from September 15 to October 2 has been designated as 'Swachhta Hi Seva' to celebrate the third anniversary of 'Swachh Bharat'. Cleaning of campus buildings, corridors and toilets may be ensured through effective garbage collection and solid waste management system," the UGC said in a communication to universities.

The commission has further said that "tree plantation may be undertaken on the campus depending on the size of the campus, 70 trees may be planted to signify the 70th year of Independence".

Students and teachers can take pledge to observe hygiene and cleanliness in all aspects of daily life and to make others to follow suit.

"While it is expected that all varsities have installed requisite facilities for rain water harvesting, it is requested that the same may be inspected, audited for adequacy and re-charge facility so that they are fully functional," the UGC order said.
