New Delhi/Bhubaneswar: It seems India is going to emulate some of the western countries where military service for the citizens is compulsory.

As per reports, the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) is preparing a proposal to make five-year of compulsory military service for all those who want a subsequent employment with the state or the central government.

If media reports are to be believed, a Parliamentary Standing Committee has recommended for the new rules in this regard.

The decision has reportedly come against the backdrop of shortage of officers and men in the Indian defence forces.

Besides, the Standing Committee had earlier recommended to the Ministry of Defence (MoD) to come up with a new proposal, Oneindia reported.

However, the Ministry of Defense had showed a lukewarm response towards the recommendation following which it shifted the responsibility to the DoPT.

The Indian Army has a shortage around 7,000 officers. While the Indian Air Force and Indian Navy are reeling under shortage of nearly 150 officers & over 15,000 men and 150 officers & nearly 15,000 men respectively, it reported.

It is believed that if the five years of compulsory military service is materialized then the shortfall can be bridged.
