Bhubaneswar: Taking stern note of violations of lockdown norms put in place to prevent the spread of Coronavirus, Odisha government has decided to empower police officers to take necessary action against violators.

As per the latest notification, State Home Department has authorised Officers-In-Charge of various police stations to file complaints in the courts under their jurisdictions pertaining to the offences committed under Section 51 to 60 of the Disaster Management Act, 2005 and Section 188 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

The powers have been delegated under Section 60(a) of the Disaster Management Act, 2005 (Central Act no.53 of 2005).

Earlier yesterday, Odisha DGP Abhay reviewed the preparedness of the department ahead of the resumption of certain services starting from April 20. Abhay stressed on proper investigation and prosecution of lockdown related cases.

The police officials have been directed to ensure strict enforcement of the prescribed norms of Coronavirus lockdown, intensify enforcement activities against sale of illicit liquor and take necessary action in cases related to domestic violence.

It is pertinent to mention here that despite warnings, people in different parts are using two-wheelers to visit to markets to buy groceries and other items for daily use.

The Commissionerate Police of Bhubaneswar-Cuttack today seized over 20 vehicles from near Unit 4 and Unit 8 fish market in Bhubaneswar and fined over 70 persons for violating lockdown guidelines.

Senior officials informed that in the last 24 hours in the State, 252 persons were arrested and a total of 122 cases were registered including 117 cases of lockdown violations, one for spreading rumours and four others.

Odisha government is taking all possible steps to contain the spread of Coronavirus in the State. Earlier today, Odisha government ordered a ban on spitting in public places which will now be treated as a cognizable & compoundable offence following an amendment of the COVID19 Regulations under Epidemic Diseases Act.
