New Delhi/Bhubaneswar: India has already witnessed over a million COVID-19 cases which show the situation is grim on the ground. Indian Medical Association of India on Sunday observed that the community spread of the viral disease has already started in India and the situation is pretty bad in the country.

The number of Covid-19 positive cases tally has reached 10.77 lakh with 26,816 deaths, making India the third country after United States and Brazil to touch this figure.

“This is now an exponential growth. Every day the number of cases is increasing by more than around 30,000. This is really a bad situation for the country,” Dr VK Monga, the Chairman of IMA Hospital Board of India, told news agency ANI.

He further said that the disease is spreading to the rural areas. “This is a bad sign. It now shows a community spread,” Dr Monga added.

Meanwhile, Dr Arvind Kumar, Chairman of Centre for Chest Surgery at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital on Sunday supported Dr. Munga’s claim and said, “Community transmission has been there from quite some time. It was localised to pockets, for instance- in Dharavi & several areas of Delhi. I totally agree with IMA that there is community transmission in India”

Notably, Kerala was the first state to claim the community spread of Coronavirus. Kerala chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan had said on Friday that there is a community spread in some places in coastal areas of Thiruvananthapuram district.
