Bhubaneswar: Ganjam continues to give jitters to Odisha government as 12 more COVID-19 cases were detected in the district on Saturday. A total of 17 cases, including 12 from Ganjam, three from Mayurbhanj and one case each from Bhadrak and Sundergarh were reported today, taking the State’s tally to 287.
As per the data of the State Information and Public Relations Department, 16 out of the total 17 new COVID-19 patients reported from Ganjam, Bhadrak and Mayurbhanj are Surat returnees while one positive case has been detected in the containment zone of Rourkela.

With 83 COVID-19 positive cases, Ganjam district accounts for 28.9 % of the total positive cases reported so far in the State. The only respite is the fact that almost all the confirmed novel coronavirus (n-CoV) cases are Surat returnees.

Of the 287 positive cases in Odisha, 222 are active cases while 63 people have recovered so far.
It is pertinent to mention here that Ganjam had reported two confirmed cases of COVID-19 on May 2, and one each on May 4 and 5. However, it saw an exponential jump in the next three days with 67 more returnees testing positive, taking the tally in the district to 71 yesterday.
Apart from Ganjam, Jajpur district has reported 55 COVID cases, followed by Khurda (50), Balasore (27), Bhadrak (25), Sundergarh (13), Kendrapara (8), Mayurbhanj (7) and Jagatsingpur (5).
Five districts- Bolangir Cuttack, Jharsuguda, Kalahandi and Keonjhar reported two cases each while Deogarh, Dhenkanal, Koraput and Puri have reported one COVID-19 case each so far.
As a precautionary measure, the State government yesterday increased the quarantine period for all persons returning to Odisha. However, depending on the conduct of the returnees and their health condition after 21 day of mandatory institutional quarantine centre, they will undergo a seven-day home quarantine.
During home quarantine, the returnees need to strictly follow the prescribed government guidelines as any violation of the norms will attract stern legal action.
