Bhubaneswar: After maintaining a 'social distance' with COVID-19 successfully for three consecutive days, Odisha reported a positive case on Saturday taking the tally in State to 61. The patient is a 58-year-old male from Balasore district while contact tracing is being carried out, informed State government. As on April 18, the deadly n-CoV has spread its tentacles to 10 districts in Odisha, Balasore being the new addition to the list.

The good thing is Union Health Ministry today mentioned that two districts of Odisha- Puri and Bhadrak are among several districts in India that have not reported any fresh COVID-19 case during the last 14 days.

Earlier today, the State Information and Public Relations department informed that three positive cases from Bhubaneswar have recovered and will be discharged soon. So far, 24 COVID positives in the State have been cured of the disease.

Currently, there are 35 active cases in Odisha and 103 people are in hospital isolation. A total of 8619 samples have been tested for COVID-19 till April 17 midnight.

Meanwhile, with the situation yet to normalise, Sundergarh district administration has ordered to extend containment enforcement at Bisra for more 48 hours till 11.30 AM of April 20, 2020, while stating that the containment period might be extended if situations warrants. The containment order for the area was scheduled to cease today at 11.30 AM.

Odisha Health & Family Welfare Department today informed that VIMSAR Burla has got necessary approval to conduct COVID-19 testing. With this, COVID-19 sample testing facilities are available in 3 Medical Colleges, 4 government institutions and 1 private hospital in the State.

Bhubaneswar's Sample Testing Per Lakh More Than India's Big Cities

The sample collection for COVID testing in Bhubaneswar has been intensified with the health department expecting to meet the target of 5000 tests this week. The testing is being done based on the vulnerability list as prescribed by ICMR and H&FW Department, GoO. As planned, persons with travel history, contacts of COVID-19 patients, health and sanitation workers and persons with Influenza-like illness and SARI (Severe Acute Respiratory Illness) shall be tested on a priority basis.

Besides, random tests will be conducted in different clusters. Accordingly, samples are being collected from persons identified with the help of different RWAs (Resident Welfare Associations), Puja Committees, Ward Officers, ANM and Anganwadi Workers.

"Happy to share that antibody rapid test for COVID-19 has commenced in Bhubaneswar today. It is a serological test. Blood is taken from the vein and the result can be known in 15-30 minutes. This test is being done primarily for the purpose of surveillance. Collection of nasal and throat swabs for RTPCR test will continue for all contacts of positive cases, all SARI and ILI cases, all persons with flu-like symptoms and all high-risk asymptomatic cases throughout the State including Bhubaneswar. Initially, persons on active duty such as healthcare workers, police force, sanitation workers, delivery personnel, vegetable vendors, milk booth owners, as well as people living in containment zones and nearby slums shall be covered on priority for rapid tests in Bhubaneswar.," stated H&FW department.

In the daily COVID briefing, State Health Secretary Nikunja Dhal said that Odisha has received 6000 rapid testing kits from ICMR in the first phase. "The blood collected from a person and tested in a kit can show if s/he has developed any antibodies related to COVID-19. If the results are negative, it's fine but in case it shows positive, swab samples would be collected for testing in RT-PCR machines," explained Dhal.

Odisha CM Announces Rs 100 Crore Package For Urban Poor Families

On Saturday, CM Naveen Patnaik announced a livelihood package of Rs 100 crore for economically weaker sections residing in 114 Municipal areas of the State. This labour intensive scheme named 'Urban Wage Employment Initiative' will cover 4.5 lakh families in urban areas. Under the initiative, various labour-intensive works will be undertaken in urban local bodies till September, maintaining social distancing. The work will be undertaken in collaboration with Mission Shakti and the dues will be credited to accounts of beneficiaries directly, every week.

Notably, the lockdown period declared earlier has been extended from April 30 to the midnight of May 3.
