Bhubaneswar:  Post a decline for two successive days, cases of novel Coronavirus in the country surged again on Monday. The surge continues on Tuesday as well. As on 2 PM today, reports from states suggest  detection of nearly 60 new Covid-19 cases in the country.

Covid-19 growth rate

Since the pandemic has completed two months in India on Monday, first case was detected on Jan 29, the big trend observed today is a sizable 44 per cent of the Covid-19 positives in India belong to the age-group of 18-30 years. And a nearly 17 per cent of the Covid-19 positives in the said age-group are females.

The above hard facts bust the myth that novel coronavirus infects only elderly populace. There is a divergence seen in India vis-a-vis worldwide.

Significant mentioning here is the above inferences are drawn after studying age-profile data of over 573 Covid-19 positives under treatment or cured in the country, including Odisha.

Coronavirus Gender Affiliation

A look at the novel coronavirus infection across the gender divide pops up no big surprises. A peek through the gender prism reveals that when 69 per cent of novel coronavirus positives in the country are males, the female proportion stood at around 31 per cent. And the trend in the country is almost in sync with the global trend.

Covid-19 gender chart

Another noteworthy mention here is, though, gender-wise Covid-19 cases of all the 1251 cases are not available, the gender-wise distribution nationally has been derived from data of over 630 cases, which constitutes nearly 50 per cent of the total Covid-19 cases in the country. And such a high sample is enough to estimate the evolving coronavirus trend in country.

Why males are vulnerable than females?

As per US based Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), since the novel coronavirus is a respiratory system related infection and infects lungs and respiratory tracts, a weaker lung profile in male population makes them more vulnerable to n-CoV vis-a-vis females.

Covid-19 Fatality story

Since males are majorly affected by Covid-19, the gender divide (Male : Female) in novel coronavirus deaths in the country stands at 70:30.  The age-profile of the mortality chart shows 90 per cent of the Covid-19 deaths belong to 60 years and above age-group. Around 9 per cent has been in the age-bracket of 35-45 years.

As the Covid-19 enters the third month today,  a worrying trend observed in the country is a high of 12 deaths have occurred during the last 96 hours. In contrast, the number of cured Covid-19 cases in the country during the same period stands at 67.

Other disconcerting stats surfaced today are: The fatality rate in India has risen to 2.5 per cent yesterday. As reports of new deaths have come in today, the mortality rate has crossed 3 per cent today. The good thing is recovery rate has also risen today to around 10 per cent (9.8%).
