Bhubaneswar: In a success for the Crime Branch, two persons have been convicted in connection with misappropriation of government funds to the tune of Rs 1.9 crore in Jajpur District Panchayat Office here on Tuesday.

Official sources said, former Panchayat Officer Brajaraj Biswal and cashier Bichitrananda Mohanty have been convicted to undergo 7 years imprisonment by the CJM court, Jajpur.

The Court has also imposed a fine of Rs 20000 each on the duo convicted under sections 120 (B), 409, 467 and 471 of the Indian Penal Code.

Informing about the development on social media, Special Director General (Crime Branch) BK Sharma informed that the accused had misappropriated nearly Rs 1.9 crores of Government money.

The duo had fraudulently withdrawn the money from banks through fake cheques.

Initially, local police had registered a case in connection with the fraud and later Odisha government had ordered a probe by the Economic Offence Wing of the Crime Branch.
