The death of a Class IX student at the Kalinga Institute of Social Sciences (KISS) in Bhubaneswar has taken a major turn, with the Twin City Commissionerate Police on Wednesday claiming that the boy was murdered by his own classmates.
As per the police, the student was allegedly assaulted and strangulated inside a hostel washroom following a dispute, contradicting the institute’s earlier claim that he had died after slipping in a bathroom.
According to the Commissionerate Police, three students have been detained in connection with the incident, and the case is being investigated by Infocity Police Station on the basis of a Zero FIR. Senior police officials confirmed that preliminary findings point to homicidal violence rather than an accidental fall.
Allegations Of Assault And Concealment
Police sources said the assault took place inside the washroom, where the victim was allegedly first beaten and then strangulated. The Commissionerate Police stated that the findings emerged during the course of an investigation initiated after the family raised serious objections to the circumstances surrounding the death.
The case came to light after the deceased student’s father alleged that KISS authorities handed over his son’s body without conducting a post-mortem examination. He also claimed that there were visible injury marks on the body, including what appeared to be cut marks near the neck, raising doubts about the institute’s version of the incident.
Family members alleged that KISS authorities attempted to suppress the matter by delaying disclosure and refusing to share evidence. The official explanation initially given to the family was that the boy had sustained injuries after slipping inside the hostel toilet and later died during treatment.
Family Protests, Demands Post-Mortem
The deceased student, a resident of Tikargumura village in Keonjhar district, was enrolled at KISS, a residential educational institution for tribal students. On December 13, the family staged a protest by placing the body outside the Keonjhar Collector’s office, refusing to perform the last rites until a post-mortem was conducted.
The family alleged that no medical records, treatment papers or written explanation were provided either by KISS or by KIMS Medical College and Hospital. Relatives questioned how a student who was reportedly admitted with a leg fracture could die within hours without a detailed medical briefing to the parents.
Following the protest, the district administration intervened, and the body was sent for post-mortem examination.

No Response From Institute
As of the filing of this report, neither KISS authorities nor KIMS Medical College and Hospital had issued a detailed public statement addressing the police findings, the allegations of assault, or the claims regarding the absence of medical documentation and delayed reporting to the police.
The Commissionerate Police said the investigation is continuing and that further action will depend on custodial questioning, forensic evidence, and the post-mortem report.
