Berhampur: With no let-up in Covid surge, Ganjam district administration on Thursday prohibited all non-essential vehicular movement in the region till 31st July as a precautionary measure to stop the skyrocketing of cases.
Ganjam collector took to twitter and urged people of the district not to travel on vehicles without any emergency situation. Agricultural activities, essential goods transportation and movement of health services have however been exempted from the restrictions.
“No vehicles please till 31 July. Except agriculture, goods and health purposes, all vehicles movement banned in Ganjam from 1st July. Please cooperate. All are requested not to leave their place & not to travel more than 1 km. Senior citizens must stay at home," the district collector tweeted.
The district administration has sought cooperation from public and requested them to stay only at homes or workplaces. Travelling more than 1 km has been strictly forbidden. Authorities have issued an advisory for senior citizens and asked them to remain homebound during the period. Similarly, practice of consuming food outside in public places has been strongly discouraged as there are chances of violation in social distancing norms.
At a time when the district continues to remain the worst-hit region by SARS-nCoV pandemic, the authorities have appealed people not to put lives at risk and avoid every possible violation as these might create problems for the vulnerable.
Meanwhile, the total number of Coronavirus cases in the district surged above 1500-mark. With 95 new cases, the total positive tally in the State touched 1567 as on Thursday. On July 1, the district reported a whopping 102 positive cases.
According to Health Department data, there are 510 active cases in the district and 1041 have recovered from the viral disease. Ganjam has also been hit the hardest in terms of death toll with as many as 15 patients having already succumbed to the disease in the district.
