Bhubaneswar: A couple of days after a bed-ridden woman of Odisha was carried on a cot to a bank by her daughter for withdrawal of money from her Jan Dhan account in Nuapada district, India Post Payments bank lent a helping hand to the elderly woman.
India Post Payments bank which aims to provide house to house banking services opened a bank account in the name of the woman, identified as Labhe Baghel which will enable her withdraw cash at her doorstep using Aadhaar Enabled Payment System.
Union Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad informed about the development through a tweet. “Had learnt from media about difficulty faced by a very old lady in Odisha in withdrawing cash from her bank account. Happy to share that India Post Payments bank helped her by opening a bank account. Now she can withdraw cash at her doorstep using Aadhaar Enabled Payment System,” he posted in his Twitter handle.
According to reports, the elderly woman was pulled on a charpoy to the Utkal Grameen Bank’s Bargaon branch in Nuapada by her daughter Quinmati Sika after the bank authorities reportedly demanded her presence for withdrawal of money from Jan Dhan account.
The incident which was reported on June 10 had gone viral on social media, triggering widespread outrage. Taking note of the matter, the Odisha government had suspended the manager of the bank branch.
In a statement, Utkal Grameen Bank had informed that the elderly woman’s daughter had come to the Bargaon branch on June 9 to withdraw money from her mother’s account by putting her own thumb impression. After knowing that the account holder is bed-ridden, the bank manager had assured to visit their house to facilitate payment. But as it was a single officer branch, the manager could not visit their house due to rush in the bank and assured to pay a visit on June 10.
“The branch manager did not have any intention to harass anybody. But the unfortunate developments led to a communication gap resulting in display of inhuman and insensitive approach by the bank in treating senior citizens. A departmental action is being initiated against the erring official,” Utkal Grameen Bank’s statement read.
