Berhampur: Divyangs under the banner of Ganjam district Orthopaedically Handicapped Welfare Association on Monday launched a fast unto death protest over the district administration’s plan to demolish their Samartha School meant for the differently-abled students.
The agitating members, who sat in protest in front of the collector’s office, have alleged that the district administration has intentionally cut electricity and water supply connections to the school and declared the 20-year old building as unsafe.
Moreover, the administration is planning to build a park by demolishing the building which offers education to scores of divyang students in the area, the protesters alleged.
“The building is just 20 years old. Then how it is unsafe? The district administration has some vested interest and it is planning to build a park by demolishing the building,” alleged K Anand Rao, general secretary of the association.
Reacting on the development, Ganjam collector Vijay Amruta Kulange said, “The house is in dilapidated condition and it is unsafe for a large number of divyangs staying there. Even PWD has declared the building as unsafe.”
“Till a new building for them is constructed, we have made temporary arrangements for the stay of the students at two different schools,” Kulange added.
