From a pan shop owner’s son to being bought at a whopping Rs 5.80 crore, the remarkable journey of uncapped India batter Shubham Dubey is nothing short of a dream come true. The young sensation was bought by Rajasthan Royals for a whopping Rs 5.80 crore during the IPL 2024 auctions in Dubai.
For Dubey, December 19 will always be a special day as he was bought by the 2008 champions Rajasthan Royals. With a base price of Rs 20 lakh, Dubey was sold for Rs 5.80 crore after Rajasthan and Delhi Capitals engaged in an intense bidding war.
It is a life-changing moment for Dubey who hails from a very humble background in Nagpur and will now be teammates with star players like Sanju Samson, Jos Buttler and many other RR players.
His rise to cricket stardom isn’t a cakewalk as Shubham had to face numerous obstacles due to his family background. He hails from a lower-middle-class family in Nagpur and his father runs a pan stall. A young talent, Dubey first rose to glory after his heroics in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (SMAT), where he scored 222 runs in just 7 matches.
An elated Dubey after his auction said, “It’s an unreal feeling. I did well in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. So, I was hopeful of being picked in the auction. Frankly though I was not expecting such a big amount.”
He recalled his bad days and said, “Our financial condition was so bad that I couldn’t even buy gloves. But my mentor late Sudeep Jaiswal backed and guided me a lot. Without his support, I wouldn’t have achieved anything in life.”
