Woman ‘gangraped’ in Odisha’s Mayurbhanj; two detained, hunt on for others

A 22-year-old woman from Bangiriposi in Mayurbhanj district was allegedly gangraped by five men after being lured with the promise of a job on Friday evening.

A 22-year-old woman from Bangiriposi in Mayurbhanj district was allegedly gangraped by five men after being lured with the promise of a job on Friday evening. Acting on her complaint, police have detained two persons and launched a search for the others.

According to the police complaint, the woman was contacted on Friday evening by two men she knew. They told her that they could help arrange a job in a company and offered to take her along in a vehicle. Believing them, she boarded an Omni car in which the duo drove her towards Udala, located nearly 80 kilometres away.

As the journey progressed, three more men joined the vehicle. The group then allegedly diverted the car towards a deserted stretch between Udala and Balasore. It was here, the woman told police, that all five men took turns to rape her.

Assault and Rescue

When the victim resisted and raised an alarm, the accused allegedly forced her out of the vehicle and fled the spot. Locals in the area noticed her distressed condition and helped her return home.

The woman later narrated the ordeal to her family members, following which they approached the police.

Case Registered, Investigation Underway

A case has been registered under the relevant sections based on the survivor’s statement. Udala Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Hrushikesh Nayak confirmed that two suspects have been picked up for questioning.

“Acting on the statements of the victim, Case No. 356 has been registered at the Udala police station. Among the five accused named in the complaint, two have been detained. A probe is on into the matter, and additional details will be revealed in due time,” Nayak said.

Reports added that senior officers of the Mayurbhanj police are monitoring the probe. Additional teams have been deployed to track the absconding men.

The crime took place under the jurisdiction of Udala police station. Police said that forensic and medical examinations have been arranged as part of the investigation, and further legal action will follow after the arrests.
