According to police sources, in a disturbing incident from the village under Dhenkanal Sadar police limits, the 25-year-old woman named Puja Patra was allegedly murdered by her husband over dowry demands. The woman had married around seven years ago to Rashmit Patra, an auto-rickshaw driver.
As per an FIR lodged by the victim’s parental family, Puja was subjected to regular physical abuse and mental harassment by her husband and mother-in-law, who allegedly pressured her to bring money from her parental home. Despite enduring years of torture, the situation reportedly escalated, leading to her tragic death.
Upon receiving the news of her death, Puja’s parental family from Kasikiari village under Cuttack’s Maniabandha police limits rushed to the hospital. Later, the family lodged an FIR at Dhenkanal Sadar police station. Puja’s body was recovered by local police and sent to Athagarh government hospital for a post-mortem.
Puja was the daughter of Kesab Das, who hails from Kasikiari village.
Police have registered a case of dowry death and detained Rashmit Patra. An investigation is underway, and further legal actions will follow based on the awaited post-mortem report and statements of witnesses, if any.
The incident has once again highlighted the grim reality of dowry-related violence in Odisha, raising concerns about the safety and dignity of women even in modern times.
