Once again, a series of burglaries has shaken Odisha’s capital, Bhubaneswar. Four unoccupied duplex homes in City Home Duplex under the Pahala police limits were targeted by looters, who stole gold and diamond jewellery along with a substantial amount of cash worth over Rs 20 lakh. The incidents occurred during the night of December 9 and the early hours of December 10.

The burglars reportedly entered the properties by climbing the boundary walls and forcing their way through the main entrance doors. Once inside, they dismantled metal wardrobes and safes to loot all valuables, including cash and jewellery. After securing the loot, they searched other parts of the rooms for additional valuable items to steal. To avoid identification, the burglars severed the CCTV cables set up inside the room to avoid the crime getting recorded.

One of the victims recounted, “I suspect that the loot happened between the night of December 9 and the morning of December 10. I checked the CCTV footage on the night of December 9 at around 11 pm, and everything appeared fine. However, in the morning, the CCTV displayed ‘device offline,’ which I initially thought was a network issue. The burglars entered by jumping over the boundary wall and broke down the main entrance door. They looted ornaments and cash worth nearly Rs 20 lakh.”

The victim’s wife, devastated by the incident, added, “They took away everything we had. We are completely devastated. Now we fear for our safety and are left wondering how we can protect ourselves.”

Residents are now raising questions about police efficiency and their commitment to civilian safety, especially as burglaries are being reported in different parts of Bhubaneswar. Despite the crime occurring five days ago, no significant action was taken.

Victims allege that no scientific team or dog squad was deployed to the scene, and crucial evidence such as clothes and slippers left behind by one of the burglars has not been investigated thoroughly.

Meanwhile, the police have launched an investigation into the matter based on the CCTV footage of the premises. However, no comment could be obtained from the cops over the allegations of the victims.
