Two people died and two were critically injured after being hit by a goods train at the Kalunga railway crossing in Rourkela on Tuesday night.
According to sources, the accident took place at around 10 PM when the four youths were crossing the railway tracks on two separate motorbikes, unaware of the incoming of a goods train. While two of them died on the spot, two others were found in critical condition.
Brahmani Tarang police and the GRP (Government Railway Police) reached the spot and rushed the injured to a nearby private hospital whereas the dead bodies were sent to a government hospital in Rourkela, added sources.
Visuals from the site showed mangled remains of the two motorcycles, showcasing the severity of the accident. Reportedly, all of the victims worked at Kalunga and while one of the dead youths hailed from Jharkhand, the other was from Assam.

Sources also informed that the two injured were subsequently shifted to the Rourkela Government Hospital, where their condition was reported to be stable.
Meanwhile, the GRP has started an investigation into the matter but has not offered any additional comments regarding the exact circumstances of the accident. Post-mortem of the two deceased will be conducted today to ascertain details.

Reports stated that locals have warned of protests, citing long-standing demands for an overbridge at the busy Kalunga railway crossing that have gone unaddressed.
