In a major development, the Mahila Police in Sambalpur have arrested an Assistant Professor of GM University for allegedly harassing a girl student, sources said on Thursday.
The accused man has been identified as Gopikant Suna, an Assistant Professor from the Education Department.
Following allegations of harassment by a female student, Suna has been arrested, informed Sambalpur Superintendent of Police (SP) Mukesh Kumar Bhamoo.

According to official sources, yesterday (on July 16, Wednesday) at around 2.36 PM, a 20-year-old female student of 2nd-year BA BEd at the Gangadhar Meher University (GMU), presently staying at a rented house in Angulalane, Sambalpur, lodged an FIR.
The student alleged that Gopikant Suna (32), who hails from Dahita village under Boden police limits of Bargarh district, had entered into a physical relationship with her on false assurance of marriage. However, he subsequently refused to marry her.
The accused presently resides in his quarters at Professor Colony in Budharaja locality.
A Mahila PS case [No.-56, Date: 16.07.25, U/s 69 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS)] has been registered in this connection. Police have initiated a detailed probe into the allegations.
Gopikanta Suna has been working in the Education Department since December 18, 2023. He had emotionally trapped her, gained her trust, and established a sexual relationship with her, the FIR mentioned.
After a few days, the complainant learnt that the accused man had similarly exploited several other students, which caused her severe mental agony. She also alleged that the accused had been misusing his position to exploit innocent students.
The accused was arrested and forwarded to a court in Sambalpur.
