The 'Samartha' rehabilitation centre for mentally challenged individuals in Sambalpur is set to be blacklisted following serious allegations of torture surfaced. The Sambalpur District Collector announced the decision on Tuesday after the district administration took swift action in response to the claims.

A case has been filed at the Dhanupali Police Station against Harishchandra Das, the secretary of the NGO operating the centre, and a female caregiver. Das has been detained, with the possibility of his arrest.

What Are The Allegations Against The Organisation?

The allegations stem from reports that inmates at the 'Samartha' centre were subjected to physical abuse, including beatings while being served food. The disturbing incident came to light after a video of the abuse went viral, prompting the police to raid the facility for further investigation.

The centre was intended to provide care and housing for individuals with mental disabilities. However, after receiving reports of abuse, local authorities launched an investigation, resulting in their involvement at the facility.

Reports have emerged also suggesting that residents at the centre were subjected not only to physical abuse but were provided with spoiled food. A special committee has been established to investigate these claims and will issue its findings after a thorough review.

What Did The Police Say In This Regard?

“We received a complaint that mentally challenged inmates are being tortured in a rehabilitation centre located at Putibandh in Netaji Nagar. The District Social Security Officer (DSSO) was instructed to conduct an inquiry and submit a report, based on which necessary action will be taken,” said Dhanupali IIC Tofan Bagh.
