Police sensitising people

The Rourkela Police has come up with a unique tactic to apprehend absconding suspects.

The Steel City Police has engaged drummers to draw people’s attention and is using a public address system to announce details of the absconding individuals in various neighbourhoods.

The primary goal of this novel approach is to inform local people about the absconding suspects and sensitise them into assisting the police.

During the last few years, many suspects have left their houses and are holed up somewhere else.  They are escaping arrest, making little of court summons and police notices.

By engaging local residents through direct announcements, the police hope to enhance the chances of swiftly capturing these fugitives, thus reasserting the rule of law in the city.

According to Rourkela SP, around 250 suspects are currently absconding after having defied the court's orders.

“As per the law, if a person doesn’t turn up at the court by a specific date, action will be initiated against him. Actions include attachment of property. Over 280 accused are now absconding. All inspectors have been instructed to start initiating action against the accused by December 31. So far, action has been taken against 28 to 29 accused persons,” said Nitesh Wadhwani, Rourkela SP.

The Rourkela Police has been drawing flak for the collapsing law and order situation. On November 4, a youth sustained critical injuries after he was shot at by miscreants near Traffic Gate market in Rourkela, raising questions about the existing security measures of the police at the Steel City.
