In a fresh case of rental scam, a dentist in Bhubaneswar was allegedly duped out of a large sum of money by a man posing as a broker.
The victim, identified as Jyoti Prakash Sahu, lodged a complaint at Bhubaneswar's Infocity police station on Saturday claiming that a broker vanished after taking a large sum of money from him as an advance payment for a rented house.
Sahu, who originally hails from Jajpur, had come to Bhubaneswar for an internship at a private hospital. While looking for accommodation, he noticed a "To-Let" poster on the roadside and subsequently contacted the number listed.

He then reportedly met the broker in Nandan Vihar and paid two months of advance rent for an apartment via UPI. However, after making the payment, the broker neither provided the house nor returned the money; and the dentist realised that he had been duped.
The incident has marked yet another instance of a spurt in fraudulent activities in the state.
