In a series of allegations, the mother of a minor girl in Astaranga village in Puri district has threatened to take her own life after accusing Astaranga police of negligence and inaction, even ten days after a formal complaint was lodged over an attack on her daughter.
According to the complainant's mother, her daughter, a Class 9 schoolgirl, was reportedly assaulted by two bike-borne miscreants while returning from tuition on July 10. The assailants allegedly dragged her near a park and beat her before fleeing the scene.
Despite the seriousness of the attack and the passage of time, the mother claimed that no concrete steps had been taken by the local police, prompting them to stage a sit-in protest outside the Astaranga police station, demanding justice.
Shocking Attack in Broad Daylight
The incident took place near Nuagada on a deserted stretch of the village when the girl was cycling back to her school from a private tuition class.
The complaint stated that two unidentified youths riding a black motorcycle intercepted her. One of them first struck her with a stick, forcing her to flee toward her village.
However, the duo reportedly caught up with her again near a park, stopped her cycle, and dragged her to the side of the road. There, they physically assaulted her before fleeing the spot. The frightened girl returned home and narrated the ordeal to her family, who filed a complaint at the Astaranga police station the same day.
Ten Days On, No Action Taken
Even after ten days, the police have allegedly neither identified the accused nor made any arrests. With no updates from the investigation and no assurance of safety, the girl’s family sat in protest outside the police station on Friday, holding placards and demanding immediate action against the culprits.
"I demand that the administration provide justice to my daughter. All I need is for the accused should be arrested as soon as possible and declared guilty of the crime,” said the victim’s mother.
“It has been 9 days, and the law has yet to hand justice to my daughter. She is unable to attend school or college. I want to know if the law will act, or will I have to kill myself?” she said in an interaction with the media persons.
As of the last reports, no response to these allegations could be obtained from the Astaranga police.
