Police intensify crackdown on drug trafficking in Bhubaneswar

The Commissionerate Police have initiated a dedicated campaign to tackle drug trafficking in Bhubaneswar, with a focus on improving road safety, disrupting the illicit trade of marijuana (Ganja) and brown sugar, and addressing street crime, sources said on Thursday.

Officials conducted a series of raids on Wednesday, including an operation in Maitree Vihar locality, where 42 kilograms of marijuana (cannabis) were confiscated during the raids near a local educational institution. Five persons were arrested following this operation.

In a concurrent raid in the Balianta area, police seized 260 grams of brown sugar, valued at around Rs 26 Lakh. Four persons were arrested in this connection.

The police have pledged to take stringent measures against individuals caught selling drugs in proximity to educational institution premises.

“Recently, we carried out a massive drive against drug trafficking. We have seized 42Kgs of Ganja and Rs 20,000 cash. We have also apprehended five persons involved in the illegal activity,” Twin City Police Commissioner Suresh Dev Datta Singh said in a presser.

“Similarly, following raids in Balianta locality, police team seized around 260 grams of brown sugar, the value of which in the open market would be around Rs 26 Lakh. Four persons were arrested and a probe was initiated,” Singh stated while briefing mediapersons.

“Persons, who are active in selling contraband items near educational institutions and are thereby spoiling the lives of younger generation, will be dealt with sternly. We will take exemplary actions against the wrongdoers,” the Police Commissioner warned.
