In a bizarre incident, Om Prasad Jena, a postgraduate student in his second year, died while playing cricket in Puri district on Tuesday.

According to sources, Om, who hailed from Satapada, unexpectedly fell ill during the cricket match and succumbed shortly thereafter. This fatal incident has left the family and friends in deep mourning.

A friendly match between 1st-Year and 2nd-Year students was underway at a playground at Bishnupur locality in the afternoon when the mishap occurred. The young cricketer felt uneasy and collapsed on the ground all of a sudden and became unconscious.

Some locals with the help of other students took the youth to a hospital in Nimapada for treatment. However, doctors at the health facility declared him ‘brought dead’.

On being informed, a police team reached the spot and launched a probe to ascertain the cause behind Om’s untimely death. Police have registered an unnatural death (U/d) case and sent the youth’s body for post-mortem and a report is awaited.

“Probably, the youth suffered from a heart attack and died. However, the cause of death can be ascertained only after the report comes in,” a cop expressed.

A pall of gloom descended on the locality after the news of Om’s demise spread.
