Tension ran high inside the premises of the Jagatsinghpur District Headquarters Hospital (DHH) on Monday morning following the death of a pregnant woman. The deceased has been identified as Rashmita Nath.

Sources reported that the husband of the deceased, Deepak Dalei, has raised severe allegations of medical negligence against the doctors and medical staff of the hospital while also accusing the local police of high-handedness and impartiality in the matter.

Relatives of the deceased eventually staged a demonstration by placing the body in front of the hospital and have, so far, refused every attempt to vacate the premises, added sources.

What had happened?

According to medical reports, Nath was four months pregnant when she suddenly fell ill on Sunday night. Initially, she was taken to Atharabanki Health Centre, but was later transferred to the Jagatsinghpur DHH for further treatment. However, her condition worsened, and she tragically passed away.

In contrast, her husband alleged that his wife had suffered a miscarriage and was brought to Jagatsinghpur for cautionary care.

Allegations against hospital by deceased's husband

He alleged that his wife was in stable condition and responded normally, but passed away unexpectedly while under treatment. Dalei has since maintained that medical negligence led to his wife’s death.

“I accompanied my wife in the ambulance, and she responded fairly well. While under treatment, the medical staff asked my mother to leave the room and then did something that led to her death. I demand justice,” Dalei alleged.

Police high-handedness blamed

In his interaction with mediapersons, he also alleged that the medical staff hid the fact that his wife was dead and instead asked him to arrange an ambulance and shift her to SCB, Cuttack. Further, he claimed that Jagatsinghpur DHH called the police, who, instead of listening to his pleas, beat him black and blue.

Till the last reports came in, no comments could be obtained from the police or Jagatsinghpur DHH staff regarding the allegations.
