In a chilling incident in Mayurbhanj district's Kuliana locality, a man had allegedly murdered his wife and mother-in-law, buried them in his backyard, and planted banana trees to hide the graves. Police arrested the accused on Tuesday after a missing person complaint.

According to sources, the accused, identified as Debasish Patra from Sarapankha village of Nuagaon under Kuliana police limits, had brought his wife and mother-in-law home on July 13 after a prior family conflict. The victims had been staying at their paternal house due to ongoing tensions.

For nearly 15 days, there was no trace of either woman. Concerned family members filed a missing complaint. Upon investigation and subsequent interrogation, police uncovered the shocking truth—both were bludgeoned to death and buried behind the house.

A gruesome double murder has rocked Kuliana locality in Mayurbhanj district. The accused, Debasish Patra, allegedly killed his wife Sonali and mother-in-law on July 15 and buried their bodies in his backyard under the cover of planting banana trees.

Sources confirm that Sonali had returned to her paternal home two months ago following ongoing marital disputes. On July 13, Debasish went to bring her and her mother back to his home. However, after that day, both women went missing.

Acting swiftly, police recovered the bodies in the presence of a magistrate and sent them for post-mortem. The investigation is underway, and the accused remains in custody.

“He had dug an 8-10 feet deep pit and buried the bodies in it. We exhumed the bodies through a JCB machine from a spot that he identified,” ASP Deepak Gochhayat stated.

“In the presence of locals, we recovered the bodies. We have apprehended the accused, and after further probe, the cause behind the offense can be known,” the ASP added.
